Praia da Luz

Known as a fishing village, its name was taken from the church of Nossa Senhora da Luz, rebuilt after the earthquake of 1755 by the locals.

The town's history dates back to Roman times, and some ruins found show spa activities and facilities related to fish salting.

Luz is surrounded by palm trees, white sand and rock formations. The village is famous for its nightlife, restaurants, bars and clubs.

Luz is also known for the amazing Rocha Negra, surrounded by ideal spots for surfing and underwater activities, believed to have been formed 150 million years ago by volcanoes in Monchique.
